The collection Ramírez/del Campo of Radio Paris contains relative recordings to the period comprised between 1958 and 1977. They present fundamental subjects to understand our present. Some of them were very little studied until the moment.
When assessing its historical importance, we start from a clear premise: the democracy is not the simple correlate of the economic and social development. For there to be a process of political transition to democracy and a restoration of liberties in Spain required a prior cultural change. A phenomenon in which radio broadcasts of a critical nature with the Franco regime played a fundamental role.
Hence, these funds are of great importance for the recovery of the history and memory of our country, given the need to clarify what kind of ideas began to spread in Spain, where they came from, and what were their objectives. And not as an isolated historical reality, but imbricated in turn with the history of France, in its more internationalist, European-style side. In fact "Radio Paris" meant at the time the existence of a window to democratic freedoms in times of dictatorship, which in turn meant a window into France, Europe and Latin America. "Radio Paris" was a state television station of French propaganda and advertising, strongly influenced by the changing relations between the French and Spanish states and the backdrop of the cold war as a backdrop.
As for the funds themselves, we must reiterate their different aspects:
- In the first place the testimony of a large number of personalities of all political and cultural signs and diverse nationalities is preserved. There are interviews and testimonies of the likes of Luis Garcia Berlanga, Pablo Picasso, Francisco Rabal, Dolores Ibarruri, Rafael Alberti or the then Prince Don Juan Carlos, just to mention some examples. This is undoubtedly the most striking part of the funds, but not the only one, given that there is a wide range of recordings on fundamental aspects of the realities of their time.
- At the political level, there are numerous recordings of the 1939 Spanish Republican exile, their cultural and political activities, the institutions they founded and the French Hispanists who supported them. Without forgetting the records related to the internal dissidence to the Francoism of personalities such as Enrique Tierno Galván, Dionisio Ridruejo and Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez, among many others.
- Another important aspect is that referring to the Spanish migratory process of the 1960s, with recordings from 1961 to 1973. A phenomenon so far little studied but crucial in the historical, social, economic and also political development of our country, on which the funds can shed some light. The range of recordings in this regard is very extensive: motivations of emigrants, living and working conditions, associations, political tendencies, means of transport used in their movements, French integration policies...
- There are films about culture, arts and sciences, relations between Spain, France and the rest of Europe, the process of building Europe... without forgetting questions of exclusively French content.
The bulk of the sound donation is joined by 27 files with documents gathered by Julian Antonio Ramírez Hernando and his wife Adela Carreras Taurá reflecting the passage of both speakers by the station. Also complemented by a small private sound fund focused on the political activity developed by Julián Antonio and Adelita in Alicante during their retirement from work.
