EAJ-12 Alcoy radio could be considered a radio station traditionally linked to the cultural environment. Since its foundation, Jesús Raduán Pascual knew how to surround himself with contributors linked to the artistic and intellectual world of the city and emissions of cultural programmes (in a broad sense) occupied the radio programming from the first moments. The defeat of the second Spanish Republic produced a massive exile of artists and intellectuals. Personalities were lost as Carlos Palacio, famous composer of Alcoy, author of musical works as the Anthem of the international brigades and the steel company and that ended up collaborating in exile radio stations as Radio España Independiente: Estación Pirenáica and Radio París.
The Franco regime, in general, became Spanish radio a space for propaganda and entertainment very controlled by censorship. In conclusion, the cultural scene of the regime was more defined by the culture of mass than for own 'official' culture of dictatorship. However, and so closely linked to the major socio-economic transformations initiated from the 1950s a major cultural change process was operating in Spain. So, in the 1950s there was an important cultural flowering of personalities and entities in Alcoy. The City Council led to a policy of cultural promotion that led to the creation of various institutions and platforms, public and private initiative.
The process was reinforced during the 1960s, with the timid and contradictory policy of cultural openness of Manuel Fraga, developed a critical culture parallel to the officer, protest and resistance, cultivated by artists and dissident intellectuals with the ideological principles of Francoism. A heterogeneous cultural phenomenon that, although minority, was important and knew how to survive and thrive, taking advantage of small fissures of the legislative corpus of the dictatorship. Somehow, the culture became a real Trojan horse against francoism and it contributed to the change of mentalities that facilitated democratic transition.
Cultural programs never disappeared from Radio Alcoy, and although the vast majority of them respected the mandates of the Franco regime, coverage ended up giving to more heterodox streams with programs like La entrevista del día. Created from 1973, in this radio show interviewed characters linked to the world of culture in the broad sense, among others. A brief program (15 minutes) but very critical.
