The National Library of Spain has started its first massive digitalization project focused on magnetic audio media (cassettes and cartridges) and video (VHS and beta). Medias that not only have a high risk of physical deterioration due to their nature, but also face obsolete technology, as the availability of adequate and functional readers is decreasing, not only in the market, but in the depository institutions of this type of funds.
Initially, the conversion to digital of more than 650,000 minutes of audio and video is expected, which will involve approximately the digitization of 4,800 cassettes, 859 cartridges, more than 5,000 VHS and BETA tapes from their collections.
