This is the last book published in Spanish by the historian Gérard Malgat, collaborator of our project, where displays and analyzes all activity carried out by the Mexican diplomat Gilberto Bosques to save thousands of political refugees after the end of the Spanish Civil war and the first phase of World War II, until 1942. Most were Spanish Republicans, but there were also many victims of political persecution by the fascist Governments of the era, especially German.
Many people be saved? According to Gérard Malgat is difficult to define, but they signed close to 30 thousand visa and it is estimated that about 80 thousand people received the immigration document authorizing entry into Mexico. This does not mean that, migrate but the issuing of these documents provided life to their owners since it prevented his extradition at first. Either way is estimated at more than 20 thousand that could actually migrate.
Conversations with a ghost: claiming the figure of Bergamín
So title André Camp a series of radio interviews (12 in total) made in 1965 by the Spanish writer José Bergamín within the France Culture channel of the ORTF. Why this title? The answer is found in the transcript of the recording of the first interview:
André Camp: José Bergamín, qui êtes-vous? José Bergamín: Un fantôme!
And showed Bergamin showing ID not indicating any nationality because the French authorities considered that it was yet to be determined after having been expelled from Spain for the second time at the end of 1963 and to be exiled in Paris. We know first-hand the contents of these interviews throughout the book "José Bergamín et la France" edited by Yves Roullière and Iván López Cabello. As well as the interesting online article published also by Ivan Lopez.
