During most of the XX century, the media ande the radio played an essential role in the diffusion of classical music, maybe a more important role than CDs themselves. And the life of the composer Salvador Bacarisse was very attached to this medium, as he was in fact one of the pioneering users.
Bacarisse was born in Madrid, on September 1898, and died in Paris on August 1963. He was disciple of Conrado del Campo, had a brilliant beginning in his career and won three national music prizes. Bacarisse was member of the “Group of Eight”, founded with some ressemblance to the French group of Les Six in order to fight the musical conservatism. He is considered to pertain to the Generation of 27, also known as the Generation of the Republic, composed by musicians who bore fruit along the twenties and thirties. But he specially took part actively in Unión Radio, the antecedent of what later would become Cadena Ser, pioneering in the use of that new media, with which he became a great diffuser of classical music in our country, in spite of the technical restrictions of the time. On the other hand, he also stood out at the organisation of musical activities in support to the Republic during the Civil War.
With the victory of Franco he left Spain and permanently settled down in Paris, and although musically speaking he left his aspect of innovator, he was considered a very prolific composer during his life in the exile. Once there, he formed part of the first team of the ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion- Télevision Française) that was broadcasted in Spanish after the Liberation of France. In fact, he became musical director of the distinct programs that were broadcasted, as he was an expert in radio issues, and he continued in some way with the spreading work het had undertaken years before in Union Radio.
In the political area he was an outstanding militant of the Communist Party, and one of the founders of the famous Union of Spanish Intellectuals in France, association of whose board of directors he formed part until practically the end of his life. Julián Antonio Ramírez remembers him in his memories as an excellent man with great personality, whose apartment was meeting point for the majority of Spanish musicians who showed up in Paris during those years (ICI Paris, 62-63). Personal friend of Julián Antonio, he became the great defender of the incorporation of Adelita del Campo to Radio Paris, despite the denial of Díaz Roncero, editor in chief of the broadcasts in Spanish of those years (ICI Paris, 335).
Of his artistic legacy in the exile, it is needed to hightlight his opera Fuenteovejuna (1962), Veinticinco preludios para piano ("Twenty-five preludes for piano", 1960), and especially, the Concertino para guitarra y orquesta ("Concertino for Guitar and Orchestra", 1957), performed for the first time by Yepes and Argenta in the Théatre des Champs Elysées of Paris; a piece that, although it was not very well-known in Spain, has been used by many media as a background theme in many important events, without quoting neither its author nor its origin.
