The UFO had great social impact at the time. A social phenomenon that, as such, can be analyzed from the social sciences.
In fact, there were two important lines in the development of the UFO phenomenon. On the one hand, science fiction, with great development since the end of the 19th century, particularly in comics, magazines and film; on the other, the aeronautical development: from 18th century with the birth of the hot air balloons, UFOs were changing, always in parallel with the flying Mills developed in every moment. In other words, strange areas at the time of the hot air balloons, flying cigar in the era of the zeppelins, mysterious airplanes in the first decades of the 20th century... It is said that it was a reaction of the collective imagination of modernity, receiving strange devices where past was said to see spirits, lights, dragons and chariots of fire.
But the phenomenon of "flying saucers" as such started with force after World War II, completed the final conquest of the air, and were given the first steps into space. They grew in a first phase, the suspicious about the Soviets and the own United States air force. The outbreak of the cold war was brewing, and had a strong government secrecy over the construction of the atomic bomb and other secret weapons: a part of science had become opaque within the Western democracies.
Very soon afterwards came the hypothesis of extraterrestrial origin. The UFOs were manned by beings from other worlds, and with a specific mission: save mankind from nuclear holocaust that seemed doomed. All this in a context of social panic before the policy of "nuclear deterrence" existing between the two super-powers. The argument was reinforced with the testimonies of the first "contacted". On the other hand, since the mid-1950s, the phenomenon began to spread to the rest of the world, but always with us as epicentre. It was during the 1960s when a part of science included among its goals the search for life on other planets, beginning with NASA's own. It was launched the SETI project, to track the universe in search of radio waves emitted by extraterrestrial intelligent life. Even the Pioneer X probe carried a message to who found. But the contact did not occur. In addition, the USSR had sent probes to Venus, and the us to Mars, find signs of life whatsoever. After the cold war, were desclasificando files. He stated that there was concealment, although only related secret military projects, uncovering the existence of a permanent campaign of disinformation at the same time.
The reaction of the followers of the phenomenon was varied. Include at least three strands to mode:
-Mysticism. The appearance of a religious version of the phenomenon, in which only those chosen would be saved individually very in line with the New Age.
-The conspiracy and abduction. On the one hand, grey beings (aliens) abducting humans to experience and create a new breed; on the other hand, the "men in black", human agents of the great powers to conceal evidence and have access to alien technology.
-The alien creationism hypothesis, which speaks of intervention of extraterrestrial beings in the evolution of the human being. The gods were not anything but technologically superior beings, coming from elsewhere in the universe. With the Swiss author Erich von Däniken as avant-garde theories.
In contrast, has also emerged a radical skepticism which denies even that man has stepped the moon. The sociological and anthropological factors involved in the phenomenon are multiple. You have classified them as urban legends and closely related to the dichotomy (unfortunately, still unresolved in broad sectors of humanity), between reason and faith, science and religion, belief and experience, value of the personal testimony from the documentary evidence.
